Mosholu - The Bronx - NYC

I’ve only just begun my explorations of Mosholu, The Bronx. However, I will be returning in the future for a dedicated tour of this neighborhood, so please keep checking the Updates page and my YouTube channel!

In the northwestern corner of The Bronx is the neighborhood of Mosholu. Van Cortlandt Park is to the east, across Broadway. To the south, past the Henry Hudson Parkway, is Fieldston, while Riverdale Avenue provides the border with the neighborhood of North Riverdale.

The Neighborhood

Mosholu, located in the Bronx, is a charming neighborhood with a unique history and character. The name "Mosholu" derives from the famous four-masted sailing ship, the Mosholu, which was built in 1904 and later converted into a floating restaurant. The neighborhood's connection to this iconic vessel reflects its maritime heritage and the rich history of the area.

Originally a rural area, Mosholu experienced significant growth and development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the city expanded. It became a residential neighborhood, attracting diverse communities, including Irish, Italian, and Jewish immigrants. Over time, Mosholu has evolved into a predominantly residential area with tree-lined streets and a mix of single-family homes, apartment buildings, and small businesses.

One of the notable landmarks in Mosholu is the Bronx Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The college occupies the former campus of New York University and features a beautiful historic campus, including the iconic Gould Memorial Library and Hall of Fame for Great Americans. This architectural gem draws visitors with its grandeur and serves as a cultural and educational hub in the neighborhood.

Another prominent feature of Mosholu is its proximity to the vast Van Cortlandt Park, one of the largest parks in New York City. This green oasis offers a wide range of recreational activities, including hiking trails, sports fields, and the Van Cortlandt Golf Course, making it a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Mosholu is also known for its close-knit community and local events that bring residents together. The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center provides essential programs and services for residents of all ages, fostering a sense of unity and support within the neighborhood.

Mosholu, a neighborhood in the Bronx, has been home to several notable individuals who have made their mark in various fields. One of the most well-known figures from Mosholu is Larry David, the renowned comedian, writer, and producer. David, best known as the co-creator of the hit television series "Seinfeld" and the creator of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," grew up in Mosholu and attended William Howard Taft High School. His unique brand of humor and sharp wit have earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Another famous figure associated with Mosholu is Saul Bellow, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist. Bellow, known for his insightful and introspective works, was raised in the neighborhood and drew inspiration from his experiences there. His notable novels include "The Adventures of Augie March" and "Herzog," which established him as one of the leading voices in American literature.

Additionally, Mosholu is the birthplace of Judd Hirsch, a respected actor known for his roles in television shows like "Taxi" and "Numb3rs," as well as in films such as "Ordinary People" and "Independence Day." Hirsch's talent and versatility have earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career.

These individuals, among others, have emerged from Mosholu, showcasing the neighborhood's contribution to the world of entertainment, literature, and the arts. Their achievements serve as a testament to the creativity and talent that can be found within this vibrant Bronx community.

While Mosholu may be lesser-known compared to some of the Bronx's more renowned neighborhoods, its distinct history, community spirit, and proximity to natural beauty make it a hidden gem worth exploring.
